The VCNL4020 offers a two-in-one convenience, featuring a proximity sensor with a range of 0-200mm (ca. 7.5 inches) and a light sensor with a range from 0.26 to 16000 lux.
Have you ever needed to measure a small, specific distance with accuracy? Vishay's VCNL4020 Proximity Sensor is the perfect tool for doing so, whether it's to measure the height of a bee or other small object. Even better, the VCNL4020 can measure light too! No bumble bee required (we tried putting them in anti-static bags, but they weren't too happy with us).
but with a wider light sensor range, up to 16000 lux!
This breakout PCB integrates the VCNL4020 into our new I2C sensor line. It offers 3.3V and 5V logic level compatibility suitable for use with Feather, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and Metro328 setups. Just two wire connections plus power and ground will enable I2C communication, no soldering required thanks to the SparkFun qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors. Our Arduino drivers make set-up with the VCNL4020 simple and quick, permitting proximity approximations in moments.
.
The VCNL4020 comes with a variety of knobs you can tweak, such as how many samples per second (a.k.a the integration time between measurements) - more samples per second means faster results but not as good at measuring low level light. With 16-bit light level reports, and 0.25 lux per bit, you can measure from 0.25 to 16,000 lux! And various averaging filters can do your low-pass filtering for you so you get less spiky results. However, there is no other sensitivity/integration time controls.
